ISLAMABAD: Prime minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan co-chaired the second meeting of High-Level Cooperation Council (HLCC) and agreed to boost bilateral relations in all sectors particularly energy, communication, trade and culture.

The meeting held at the Prime Minister House was joined by high-level delegations from Pakistan and Turkey, who worked out details to strengthen cooperation in diverse fields.

Gilani said Pakistan considers Turkey as its brotherly country and intends to seek cooperation in multiple areas.

The Turkish prime minister said his country was ready to expand the scope of its ties with Pakistan, with which it enjoys fraternal relations.

Finance Minister Dr Abdul Hafeez Sheikh, Information Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira, Communication Minister Dr Arbab Alamgir Khan, Minister for National Heritage Samina Khalid Ghurki, Railways Minister Haji Ghulam Ahmad Bilour, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Nawabzada Malik Ammad Khan and Board of Investment (BoI) Chairman Saleem Mandviwala were present at the meeting.

The first HLCC meeting was held in Turkey in December 2010, where Gilani represented the country.

Judiciary can't be allowed to exercise Article 58-2(b): Gilani - PakTribune.com

LONDON: Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani said on Wednesday the coalition government had done away with the controversial Article 58-2(b) of the constitution and the judiciary could not be allowed to exercise the same right.

"Article 58-2(b) is no more part of the constitution and it could not be devolved to courts," the prime minister told the media in London.

He said the clause that empowered the president to send packing any government was put in place by former dictator General Ziaul Haq but the democratic government did away with it.

Gilani said he was not surprised by the Supreme Court's detailed judgement in a contempt of court case against him because he knew the order would welcome him the moment he departed for the UK. "I was already expecting it," the prime minister said.

"I have the right to file an appeal against my conviction. And I will use this right," he said, adding that the country was witnessing "non-serious politics" which was bringing bad name to the country.

He said PML-N President Nawaz Sharif and PTI Chairman Imran Khan wanted to become prime minister without becoming members of parliament.

Gilani said the two politicians would have to work hard to outdo him in politics. He also called upon Nawaz Sharif to end his "undemocratic attitude". "The opposition is politically immature. After Senate elections, moves were made to block annual fiscal budget," he added.

Gilani said Pakistan and the United Kingdom were partners in the fight against terrorism and extremism.

Addressing a reception at the House of Commons, Gilani said, "We have repeatedly said that we would not allow our territory to be used for any kind of attacks on other countries and we expect that the soil of other countries would not be used against Pakistan."

He said the sacrifices made by Pakistan in its campaign against militancy, terrorism and extremism were unparalleled, adding that the resolve of the two countries in this regard remained unshakeable. "I am happy to state that there is not a single political prisoner in Pakistan today. Media is completely free and the civil society is robust and human rights organisations' assertions are making qualitative difference as far as the human rights are concerned."

PTI to announce its stance on 'Go Gilani Go' - DAWN.com

LAHORE: Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaaf (PTI) will consider Nawaz Sharif’s request on Tuesday to join the ‘Go Gilani Go’ movement and will discuss important issues related to the current political situation in the country, DawnNews reported.

They will announce their decision on Tuesday (today) at 06:00pm.

The largest opposition party, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) threatened the government to accept the court’s decision or to face a protest movement against Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani.

They also announced that on this regard they are in coordination with the other parties.

However, until now PTI has reacted cautiously to the offer by Nawaz Sharif.

The past of PML-N in this regard is not so good, the information secretary of PTI said.

Moreover he said that three to four months ago, PML-N also started the ‘Go Zardari Go’ movement but then they became silent.

PTI said that if PML-N is really serious about getting rid of this government, they should split their associations with the assemblies.

According to the sources, PTI’s Central Executive Committee will today review the overall political situation in the country and then will decide on the future strategy.

Gilani: Only the parliament can remove me - gulfnews.com

Islamabad: In his first appearance in the National Assembly after the Supreme Court convicted him of contempt of court, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani declared yesterday that only the parliament had the authority to remove.

Lawmakers of the opposition Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N), which says it does not recognise him as prime minister after the conviction, walked out of the lower house of the parliament as Gilani entered the hall.

A session of the assembly overnight, which was not attended by Gilani, was marred by a rumpus as opposition and government legislators engaged in a noisy exchange of invectives and thumped desks.

"I am unanimously elected prime minister of 180 million people of Pakistan and no one, but the parliament can remove me. If the parliament de-notifies me today I will step down at once," Gilani said amid applause by the deputies belonging to Pakistan People's Party and its coalition partners.

Under the rules the Speaker of the National Assembly will examine if a question arises on whether a member of the assembly is liable to disqualification and if necessary send the issue to the Election Commission for a decision, a process which takes four months. "No one other than the Speaker of the National Assembly can de-notify me," the prime minister told the cheering legislators.

By-election

He cited Thursday's victory of a PPP candidate against PML-N nominee in a by-election in his home town Multan on a vacant seat of the legislature of the opposition-ruled Punjab assembly and also the earlier electoral success from the area of one of his sons.

This was evidence of the nation's support and confidence in the PPP and its leadership, he claimed, vowing that the coalition government was pursuing a policy of strengthening democracy in the country. "we shall not allow democracy to be derailed," he said.

Gilani challenged PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif to adopt the constitutional route to realise their desire to remove him from office. "I challenge them to bring a no-confidence motion against me in the assembly."

Parliamentary sources said the Supreme Court's verdict has been received by National Assembly Speaker Dr Fehmida Mirza, who belongs to PPP.

A seven-judge bench on Thursday punished Gilani with token imprisonment till the rising of the court while the verdict also opened the door for disqualification in accordance with the constitution's procedures.

ISLAMABAD: A seven member bench of the Supreme Court, headed by Justice Nasir ul Mulk, convicted Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani till rising of court in a contempt case, initiated against him for not implementing NRO judgement.

The bench comprising Justice Nasir ul Mulk, Justice Asif Saeed Khosa, Justice Sarmad Jalal Osmany, Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan, Justice Ijaz Ahmed Chaudhry, Justice Gulzar Ahmed and Justice Muhammad Athar Saeed announced the verdict as reserved on April 24.

The Prime Minister remained standing for 30 seconds after the announceemnt of judgement.

Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani and a large number of cabinet members including Qamar Zaman Kaira, Ghulam Ahmed Bilour, Makhdoom Amin Fahim, Rehman Malik, Babar Ghauri, Raja Pervez Ashraf, Sardar Israrullah Zehri, Makhdoom Shahabuddin and Dr. Firdous Aashiq Awan besides others including Chief Minister Sindh Syed Qaim Ali Shah and Governor Punjab Sardar Latif Khan Khosa were also present in the court room at the time of announcement of the judgment.

Ch. Shujaat Hussain accompnied the Prime Minister in the court room.

The judgement was reserved by the bench headed by Justice Nasirul Mulk on April 24 after conclusion of arguments by Attorney General for Pakistan Irfan Qadir and barrister Aitzaz Ahsan, counsel for the Prime Minister.

Entire cabinet to accompany Gilani for contempt verdict - DAWN.com

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani on Wednesday said he would appear before the seven-member bench of the Supreme Court on April 26.
“I will appear before the Supreme Court tomorrow,” Gilani told his cabinet, while chairing the weekly cabinet meeting here at the PM Secretariat.
Gilani said he had always honoured the court’s decisions and fully respects its verdicts.
Moreover, the prime minister announced during the meeting that if any other cabinet member wished to accompany him, he was welcome.
Interior Minister Rehman Malik said the entire cabinet would accompany the prime minister when he appears before the apex court.
Gilani will be making his third appearance on Thursday in front of the SC bench, headed by Justice Nasirul Mulk, hearing a contempt case against him.
The court is expected to either exonerate the prime minister of all charges, or slap him with contempt.
Gilani had earlier appeared before the Supreme Court on Jan 19 and Feb 13.
